Office of the Public Sector Standards Commissioner

Public Interest Disclosures

The Public Interest Disclosure Act 2003 (PID Act) enables people to make disclosures about certain types of wrongdoing within the State public sector, local government and public universities without fear of reprisal.

The PID Act aims to ensure openness and accountability in government by encouraging people to make disclosures and protecting them when they do.

The Commissioner's functions in relation to public interest disclosures are set out in Sections 19, 20, 21 and 22 of the Public Interest Disclosure Act 2003 (PID Act). The Commissioner's functions are to:

  • establish a code of conduct and integrity (the Code) for Public Interest Disclosure Officers;
  • prepare Guidelines to help proper authorities to apply the PID Act;
  • ensure all proper authorities have copies of the Guidelines;
  • help public authorities and public officers to comply with the PID Act and the Code;
  • monitor compliance with the PID Act and the Code; and
  • report to Parliament on compliance or non-compliance with the PID Act and the Code.
